My last post, a review of the Sugar Coated documentary, emphasized that demonizing sugar is not going to solve our obesity and health problems.

But, drinking sugar-laden beverages (slurpees, frappuccinos, pop, fruit cocktail …) to quench our thirst all summer is not the answer either. Of course, enjoying these beverages on occasion is perfectly acceptable — but not everyday!

As plain water can get pretty boring, unsweetened iced-tea is a perfect go-to summer beverage! There are so many awesome flavours to choose from.  Plus, it is so easy and inexpensive to make!

Easy Lentil Crepes

These lentil crepes are awesome. Soaked red lentils + water + spices = delicious crepes!

They fit into any diet — besides paleo. Don’t get me ranting about that diet. It definitely has its merits (whole unprocessed foods, fruits and veg, etc.), but it really doesn’t have any ground to stand on as far as the theory behind it.

Plus, I love lentils! They are nutritious little gems, full of fibre and protein. They are also very cheap. As the paleo diet does not allow beans or legumes it can make eating on a budget more challenging.

It is the year of the cauliflower (bye, bye kale).

I hope you all had fun ringing in the New Year! I spent New Year’s Eve in 100 Mile House, BC with some great friends, catching up and playing games. It was perfect.

I think this is going to be a great year. I am finishing up my 8th year of university and plan to never go back — or at least have a very long break! Never say never, I do love learning. (I am a nerd, I know).

Now for some 2015 diet advice:

The holiday season is wrapping up and soon the whole country will be on the healthy eating bandwagon trying to achieve their New Year’s resolutions.

Forget what happened over the past couple of weeks — most of us overate. You are not the only one! Stop carrying around guilt about it. Move forward and make mindful choices in the New Year.

What really counts is what happens from now until next December. Make small, maintainable changes to your everyday eating habits that will improve your health in the long run.

Oh She Glows Cookbook – Vegan Recipes to Glow from the Inside Out

Author: Angela Liddon
List Price: $29
Pages: 314

I (along with about half a million others) have always been a huge lover of Angela Liddon’s blog — so I was super excited to get her new cookbook! There is just something so great about having an actual book to look at vs a screen.

Her recipes and photography are outstanding! They are all vegan recipes but they are very easily adapted — so if you’re not vegan you will still love this book.

Angela starts her book out with the story of how she got to where she is today. Including telling readers about her 10 year struggle with an eating disorder. She talks about her shift from low-calorie diet foods (more chemicals than real food if you ask me) to a wholesome, plant-based diet. That’s when she started to GLOW!

Angela holds a Master of Social Psychology but was unfulfilled working as a researcher. After a while she quit and opened a bakery. Talk about a career change. Angela published her cookbook and had a baby this year. She certainly lives an eventful life.

Ok, so now you know a bit about the author, back to the book.

I have lived in Toronto for 5 weeks now.

Things I have discovered about “the center of the universe”:

  • they have no lane ways so you actually see all the garbage we create — somewhat troubling
  • you have to walk out into the middle of the street to get onto a street car — somewhat dangerous
  • MILK COMES IN BAGS — WEIRD
  • taxis make the most outrageous U-turns — one smashed into a fire hydrant right beside me
  • people cross the street with only 1 second left on the countdown — everyone is always in a hurry
